Calculating your Personal Cards

This article explains how to calculate your personal cards, as described in Mary K. Greer's book Tarot for Your Self.

Your Personality Card

Your personality card indicates what you have come to this particular lifetime to learn. The personality card is calculated using your birthday.

  1. Add the day, month and year of your birthday.
    Example: if your birthday is 15 February 1953, you add 15 + 2 + 1952 = 1970

  2. Add up all digits of the number you calculated in the first step.
    Example: 1970 is calculated as : 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 17

  3. If the final number is 22 or lower, it will directly correspond to the Major with the same number. If the number is higher than 22, reduce it further by adding the digits of the number again.
    Example 1: 17 = The Star
    Example 2: 26 is reduced as 2 + 6 = 8 = Strength

Your Soul Card

Your soul card indicates your soul purpose through all lifetimes. The soul card is calculated using your personality number (the number you calculated for your personality card).

  1. Add up all digits of your personality number:
    Example: 17 is calculated as 1 + 7 = 8 = Strength

There are a few special rules when calculating the soul card:

  • If the personality number is just one digit, the personality and the soul card are the same.
This means that in this lifetime you are specifically working on your soul purpose. This makes you more focused and directed.
  • If the personality number is 19, the cards are 1 (Magician), 9 (Hermit) and 10 (Wheel of Fortune).
All these cards are both your personality and your soul card. This means that you must learn to communicate your individual creative expressions. Your personal identity and sense of self are inextricably combined with your life and soul purpose.
  • If the birth date adds up to 22, the Fool (22 or 0) is your personality card and the Emperor (2 + 2 = 4) is your soul card.
The number 22 is a number of great impulsiveness and great mystery, a fine line to balance.

Your Personal Year Card

Your personal year card indicates the tests, lessons and experiences you will go through during a particular year.

  1. Add the month and the day of your birthday to the current year.
Example: your birthday is 26 January and you are calculating your year card for the year 2003. 26 + 1 + 2003 = 2030

  2. Add up all digits of the number you calculated in the first step.
    Example: 2030 is calculated as 2 + 0 + 3 + 0 = 5 = Hierophant
